Just the other day someone told me that it takes 28 days to break a habit, then another 3 months without it to completely kill it…. what do you reckon?

Obviously habit cessation will differ between people, with age, with motivation, etc.
28 days might be an approximate time frame, and with some habits it may always be with someone, just under control.
Habits take time to break. Sometimes, we just can break habits. We have to know our vices and know our habits and if they are bad, we have to change behaviour. That’s not easy. To break a habit, it takes a conscious effort to remove repeated behaviour and we can only do that effectively with strong will power. Focus on learning new skills, practise them and practise them until they are mastered and you are well on your way to breaking a habit. It can take anywhere from one day to a year or more to break a habit. You just need to re-teach yourself.
i suppose it depends what your habit is. dave broke his one day at a time. he said if i can go one day i can go two. then if i can go one week i can go two. then if i can go one month i can go two. hes been clean now for seven months and even though he can be very moody at times hes a better person for it. they say about reformed alcoholics that theyre only one drink away which i suppose is true. sometimes you have to find something else to kind of distract you.
It has everything to do with your frame of mind… I quite smoking in 1988… my partner still smokes and I am not even tempted to start again. Good luck with breaking your programing.
have discovered a person needs to want the change before that change will ever be successful
